INARI

May 1944

Building a fortification in this weather feels wrong. It becomes very warm when the sun shines, though there is still snow on the ground. First of all we built the sauna, and the prisoners are allowed to use the sauna every day just like the guards.

Biret-Ánne has joined us on the expedition and is working as a cook. Right now she has gone off to hunt for a swan. The snow is so encrusted that she won’t leave any tracks. She is a small woman, and before long she has completely disappeared from view.

Only one prisoner died on the journey. We still don’t know what to do with him, whether to bury him here or take him back to the camp. The ground is still frozen solid.

But the light—how it draws patterns across the sky. I raise my bare fingers and see their image etched against the light, and my sturdy body casts a long shadow across the blanket of snow.
